The bulk-handling cranes in Sandtorhafen are signs of an era when cargo had to be shifted to and from ships in bulk and fast. These beauties would carry large volumes of material such as coal or minerals. ​​​​​​​
The Maritime museum in Hamburg has more than 40,000 of items for display, set in a former warehouse in the HafenCity. This is also the oldest surviving warehouse in Hamburg, built in 1878-1879. The outer layer is made of bricks while it has a supporting structure of wood and steel columns.
When you don’t have a bicycle stand, you can use a handrail by one of the many canals seen in the city.
